Director of Academics

Position Overview

The Director of Academics supports Attuned’s strategic planning and instructional implementation partners and internal project leads by planning, executing on, and progress monitoring key elements of assigned projects. The Director of Academics reports to the Chief Academic Officer. The Director of Academics supports Attuned’s organizational diagnostic process, supports the development of strategic plans, and supports schools and systems leaders to create, adopt, refine, and roll out high-quality curriculum, instructional practices, assessments, teacher and principal supports, and other instructional systems. The Director of Academics also supports new projects related to academic needs and emerging knowledge in the field.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and contribute to clear and compelling organizational diagnostics that drive school system improvement.
    • Orchestrate and participate in instructional quality reviews.
      • Serve as the primary interface with school review partners, introducing them to and supporting them through the process.
      • Ensure school reviews are implemented with operational excellence (e.g., manage logistics and preparation for each review, gather the quantitative and qualitative information needed from schools, prepare reviewers, build schedules).
      • Conduct artifact analyses for schools and systems and synthesize findings into meaningful insights that help address trends.
      • Participate in school reviews as needed.
    • Conduct constituent interviews and focus groups and synthesize themes to support strengths and gaps analysis.
    • In partnership with a Chief, synthesize data from multiple sources (school reviews, performance data, artifact reviews, and constituent perspective) into meaningful insights and recommended responses.
    • Prepare materials for presentations of findings (e.g., slide decks, reports) to school system leaders and other stakeholders.
  2. Support the Chief Academic Officer’s work with instructional and school system leaders.
    • Work closely with the Chief Academic Officer and other team members to identify the unique instructional needs of each partner and to recommend solutions from our base of exemplars and resources.
    • In collaboration with our partners, track partner progress against initiatives and milestones, in part by collecting and inputting data on completion.
    • Create, curate, and refine new instructional tools, systems, and solutions.
    • Organize, participate in, and support follow through from regular instructional walkthroughs.
    • Direct project management support (e.g., developing agendas, creating and managing project plans) in curriculum and instructional engagements.
  3. Support strategic planning processes with a focus on developing academic and instructional initiatives.
    • Create, distribute, collect, and analyze partner homework assignments.
    • Propose draft deliverables and action steps aligned to strategic initiatives.
    • Curate exemplars and research to support decision making of instructional initiatives.
  4. Support the growth and development of Attuned.
    • Manage external partners with independence, including strong preparation and follow-up.
    • Share evolving education trends and best practices with the team.
    • Serve as a thought partner to colleagues, help solve a variety of day-to-day puzzles, and generate creative solutions for internal and external improvements.

Qualifications

  • Passionate commitment to the mission of dramatically improving PK-12 education for underserved children
  • Demonstrated track record of leading with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism
  • Proven track record teaching and leading in K-12 schools, including experience as a leader of a high-performing school and/or school system
  • Experience leading programs, including managing content design and development, contractor relationships, budget, marketing and recruitment, progress monitoring/continuous improvement cycles, and stakeholder communication
  • Deep knowledge of academic standards, content, and instructional systems, with expert-level content knowledge in one or more content areas
  • Ability to design and build effective adult learning experiences
  • Ability to coach, support and influence adults towards improvement
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with others in a virtual environment
  • Outstanding project management skills – ability to see the big picture and to manage details
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, take initiative, and display tenacious follow-through
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial start-up environment

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $120,000 – $150,000. We offer health care coverage and access to 401(k) plans with a matching contribution policy.
